Il se spécialise dans la recherche participative en santé mentale par l’inclusion de personnes utilisatrices de services psychiatriques et de leurs proches comme partenaires de recherche et non plus simplement comme sujets de recherche. Son programme de recherche consiste en effet à couvrir l’apport spécifique du savoir expérientiel, à en cerner les enjeux et à identifier les mécanismes favorisant cette participation. Le Programme international de recherche action participative (PIRAP) en psychiatrie citoyenne qu’il dirige se veut l’équivalent au Centre de recherche Fernand-Seguin de l’Hôpital Louis-H. Lafontaine du Bureau facultaire de l’expertise patient-partenaire de la Faculté de médecine de l’Université de Montréal.
